Uruguay Knocks Brazil Out, Semifinals Set for Copa América

The stage is set for the Copa América semifinals.

Uruguay will face Colombia on Wednesday in Charlotte, North Carolina, after defeating Brazil on Saturday in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw. The winner will move on to the final on July 14 in Miami.

La Celeste secured the last semifinal spot in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Argentina and Canada will compete in the other semifinal on Tuesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Earlier on Saturday, Los Cafeteros dominated Panama with a 5-0 victory.

Here are some quick thoughts on Saturday’s nightcap:

Play of the Game

With few highlights in this defensive battle, Uruguay’s winning goal stood out. Manuel Ugarte netted the decisive strike after two Brazilian players missed their penalty kicks.

Turning Point

Brazil seemed to have the upper hand when fullback Nahitan Nández received a straight red card for foul play following a video review. Despite the numerical advantage in the final 15-plus minutes, Brazil could not capitalize.

Key Stat

Neither team clearly deserved to win. Brazil can still lament their missed opportunities: Dorival Júnior’s squad controlled 60 percent of possession and had three times as many on-target shots as Uruguay.

What’s Next for Brazil?

The Seleção will now focus on South America’s qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA. Brazil currently stands sixth out of 10 teams and has lost three consecutive matches. They will host Ecuador on Sept. 5 and will visit Paraguay five days later.

What’s Next for Uruguay?

A highly anticipated elimination match against Colombia. Both teams are strong title contenders, although Argentina remains the favorite. If both Uruguay and the Albiceleste win, they will compete for their record 15th Copa América title next weekend at Hard Rock Stadium.
