Several U.S. and international lawmakers have condemned the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony. The controversy arose after drag queens and artists performed a spectacle that mocked Leonardo DaVinci’s painting, ‘The Last Supper,’ which depicts Jesus’ last meal with his apostles.
Outrage Among U.S. Lawmakers
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., expressed his dismay on social media. “Last night’s mockery of the Last Supper was shocking and insulting to Christians worldwide who watched the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games,” Johnson posted on X. He further emphasized, “The war on our faith and traditional values knows no bounds today. But we know that truth and virtue will always prevail.” He referenced John 1:15, stating, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., also voiced her opposition. Using the same platform, she criticized the French Olympic Committee for removing videos of the ceremony. “The French Olympic Committee has been hard at work taking down videos of their satanic, trans, and occult opening ceremonies claiming copyright laws,” Greene wrote. “It’s our first amendment right to share these videos and our outright outrage over the anti-Christian Olympic opening ceremonies.”
International Responses
Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also criticized the performance. He shared a picture of the drag queens alongside ‘The Last Supper’ image, stating, “Opening the Olympics by insulting billions of Christians around the world was a really bad start, dear French.”

Hungary’s ambassador to the Vatican, Eduard Habsburg, made a historical reference, “Decapitating Habsburgs and ridiculing central Christian events are really the FIRST two things that spring to mind when you think of [the Olympic Games].”
Public Figures React
Fox Nation host Piers Morgan also joined the criticism. He posted an image of the drag queens at a table, asking, “Btw, what the f – – – was all this about?” Morgan questioned the decision, “A drag queen mockery of the Last Supper at the Olympics? Would they have mocked any other religion like this? Appalling decision.” He added, “Unsurprising fury. Imagine if they’d mocked Islam like this.”
