A tragic incident occurred on Thursday when a man died after attempting a BASE jump from Yavapai Point at the Grand Canyon. The man, whose name has not yet been released, parachuted from the South Rim around 7:30 a.m. His body was discovered approximately 500 feet below the rim with a deployed parachute.

BASE jumping, which involves parachuting from fixed objects like buildings, antennas, spans, and natural features, is prohibited in Grand Canyon National Park. The National Park Service, along with the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office, is investigating the incident.

Yavapai Point, where the jump took place, offers a dramatic view of the Grand Canyon, with a vertical drop of about a mile to the river below. BASE jumping remains a high-risk activity, and previous incidents, such as the deaths of climbers Dean Potter and Graham Hunt in Yosemite National Park in 2015, underscore its dangers. Another fatality occurred in 2022 when a BASE jumper died attempting a jump from a building in San Diego, California.
