Tesla is recalling more than 1.8 million cars because of a hood issue that might escalate the risk of a crash.
Billionaire Elon Musk’s Tesla is recalling some 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y cars since the hood latch assembly could fail to detect an unlatched hood after it’s been opened.
The unlatched hood can completely open when the car is in motion, probably obstructing the driver’s view and growing the chance of a crash. The company in unaware of any crashes, injuries or deaths related to the problem.
Tesla did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
Tesla started out investigating consumer complaints regarding the problem on model 3 and Model Y cars in China on March 25. By mid-April, Tesla had identified the condition impacting vehicles in China as a latch switch deformation.
Tesla has investigated the issue further and determined that the frequency of occurrence is higher in China compared to Europe and North America. The cause of this discrepancy remains unclear.
Tesla stated that as of July 20, it has identified 3 warranty claims or field reports for U.S. Vehicles which are or can be associated with the hood issue.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that Tesla has released a free software update to rectify the problem.
Notification letters will be sent to vehicle owners on September 22.
For additional information, vehicle owners can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Alternatively, they can visit www.nhtsa.gov.
In a separate development, Tesla issued its fourth recall of the Cybertruck pickup since its November launch. The recall addresses issues with loose trim pieces and malfunctioning front windshield wipers.
