Global Leaders React to Biden’s Decision to Withdraw from 2024 Presidential Race

Messages of appreciation and support have flowed in from around the world following President Joe Biden’s surprising announcement on Sunday that he is withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

Biden’s exit marks the second major political event in the past week, following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. This incident saw global leaders rallying around Trump as the Republican nominee.

Following Biden’s decision, which came amid mounting pressure after a poor debate performance last month, many US allies have expressed gratitude for his leadership. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised Biden’s decision, noting his respect for the president’s choice and his commitment to the American people.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lauded Biden as a “true friend” and acknowledged his deep love for his country. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commended Biden for prioritizing the country’s interests over personal ambition.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also praised Biden’s dedication to public service, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed appreciation for Biden’s steadfast support in the conflict with Russia. Zelensky highlighted Biden’s bold decisions during challenging times.

Israeli leaders also extended their thanks, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledging Biden’s support for Israel and President Isaac Herzog referring to him as a “true ally of the Jewish people.” Defense Minister Yoav Gallant commended Biden for his support, particularly during the recent conflict in Gaza.

Irish Taoiseach Simon Harris described Biden as “a proud American with an Irish soul” and thanked him for his global leadership and friendship. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz respected Biden’s difficult decision to withdraw and praised his achievements.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called Biden’s decision “correct” and wished him well. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk highlighted Biden’s impact on global safety and democracy.

Leaders from South Korea and Japan, while refraining from commenting on US domestic politics, emphasized their commitment to maintaining strong ties with the White House. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida affirmed the importance of the Japan-US alliance, while South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol vowed to continue developing the strategic partnership.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. described Biden’s withdrawal as a demonstration of “genuine statesmanship” and thanked him for his support amid regional tensions.

Chinese social media reacted with significant interest, with discussions about Biden’s departure trending on Weibo. Some users speculated about Kamala Harris potentially becoming the first female US president, while others expressed skepticism about the political situation.
