Crucial save propels Turkey to the next round
In the dying moments of stoppage time, Turkish goalkeeper Mert Günok made an extraordinary save to prevent the match from going into extra time. Christoph Baumgartner had a clear header opportunity off a cross, aiming for the net.
Baumgartner’s header seemed destined to get past Günok, but the Turkish goalkeeper leapt to his right, deflecting the ball out for a corner kick. Turkey successfully cleared the corner, and the final whistle blew shortly after.
Austria had numerous opportunities in Tuesday’s match, dominating possession with 60.3% and attempting 21 shots compared to Turkey’s six. However, Turkey’s two goals from corner kicks secured their advancement.
Turkey will face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
Austria kept pressing for a late equalizer
Austria had a prime chance to equalize in the 84th minute. Stefan Posch delivered a cross, and Turkish goalkeeper Mert Günok came out to clear it but missed. This gave Christoph Baumgartner a header opportunity, but his attempt went wide, keeping the score at 2-1.
